Colonel Ian Keith Milani – 2001

Colonel Ian Keith Milani, NDHQ, Ottawa in recognition of outstanding and meritorious achievement in any
field of aviation, in his capacity as Director of the Canadian Aviation Training Project (CATP) which transformed
Canadian Forces undergraduate pilot training and successfully developed and marketed that program abroad to
other air forces in the UK, Denmark, Italy and Singapore. Specifically, he was instrumental in the planning and
initiation of the NATO Flying Training in Canada (NFTC) program and the transitioning of DND pilot training
at CFB Portage la Prairie to contracted services with Bombardier, which in turn significantly affected the follow
on pilot training programs at Moose Jaw and Cold Lake. As a result of his effort and vision, the historical
tradition of Canadian and allied aircrew training alongside, originally set in motion in the wartime BCATP, is not
only preserved but renewed. His commitment and contribution to the revitalization of Air Force pilot training are
remarkable in its success and highly deserving of special recognition. He is a worthy recipient of the Air Marshal
Bishop Memorial trophy.
