Lancaster aircraft #KB 778 was flying in the dark and in a snowstorm when it hit some trees on high ground one mile north of Baraque, Fraiture, Belgium. P/O W. Ashdown and one of the crew, not Canadian, were also killed. One Canadian was injured and three Canadians were safe and uninjured. WAGNER, GORDON JAMES FS(WAG) R59564. From St. James, Manitoba. Killed in Action Jun 26/42 age 21. #70 Squadron (Usquam). FS Wagner was wounded and died when his Wellington aircraft was hit by enemy cannon and machine gun fire. The aircraft returned to base but had to make a crash landing due to hydraulic failure. Although some of the crew were injured FS Wagner was the only casualty. Flight Sergeant Wireless Operator Air Gunner Wagner was buried at Landing Ground 104, El Daba, exhumed, and reburied in the El Alamein Military Cemetery, Egypt.

Halifax aircraft #LW 390 crashed twelve miles south of Arras, France at Sousatre Pas De Calais during a night operation against Stuttgart, Germany. P/O Waite maintained control of the aircraft long enough for his crew to bail out, he went down with the aircraft. Five Canadians, FSs Redman, Gammon, Gibson, Powell, and McDougall taken Prisoner of War. One of the crew, not Canadian, missing believed killed. WAKEFIELD, DOROTHY MARIA CPL W300100 – chef. From Forrest, Manitoba. Killed May 11/45 age 25. #5 R.S., Clinton, Ontario. Cpl. Wakefield was riding a bicycle off duty and was killed when she was struck by an automobile at Clinton. Corporal Wakefield is buried in the Brandon Cemetery at Brandon, Manitoba.

F/O Wakeman was killed in his Typhoon aircraft #JR 366 when he was attacking the railway road junction south of Zwolle, Holland. His aircraft was hit by flak and blew up. FS Walker was flying Spitfire aircraft #BL 799 at 30,000 feet thirty miles west of Dyce when the aircraft went into a spin then crashed and burned near Dyce. The crash is believed to have been caused by the failure of FS Walker’s oxygen supply. Flight Sergeant Pilot Walker is buried in the Dyce Old Churchyard, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

WALKER, JAMES ARTHUR S/L(P) 40768 D.F.C. & Bar – Royal Air Force. From Gleichen, Alberta. Killed in Action Feb 8/44 age 25. #31 Squadron (In Caelum Indicum Primus). S/L Walker was an ace, credited with destroying nine enemy aircraft. He was in the Battles of France and Britain and was with #111 Squadron flying Hurricane aircraft over Dunkirk when he shot down four aircraft in May and June, and three more in August of 1940. S/L Walker flew Spitfire aircraft with #610 Squadron and was assigned to the Middle East with #94 Squadron to fly Hurricanes in 1941; in 1943 he went to India to Command #31 Squadron. One of the Sqdn. pilots ex F/O Andy Russel D.F.C. of Indian Head, Saskatchewan recalls the following, “S/L Walker’s -instructions in what to do in case they were attacked were, “dive for the ground in all directions.” When Japanese Zero fighter aircraft attacked the Squadron every pilot followed instructions except Walker, who stayed up there flying his Dakota aircraft in circles so the rest of us could escape, he should have got the V.C. for his sacrifice.” S/L Walker and his brother George were two of the very few brothers who were each awarded a D.F.C. George earned his D.F.C. in early 1940 before his #58 Squadron Whitley aircraft was shot down and he was taken Prisoner of War. He was shot down a week before he was to be married. The citation to his second Bar to the D.F.C. reads, “S/L Walker assumed command of #243 Squadron at a difficult time and by his leadership and excellent example was responsible for bringing it to its present high standard of efficiency. He has been largely instrumental for the many successes achieved by the squadron, and has himself destroyed at least four enemy aircraft and damaged others.” Wing Commander Pilot Walker is buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, Woking, Surrey, England.

The aircraft was found by aviation enthusiasts in August of 1989 buried nine feet in the mud. F/O Watt had been slightly injured on March 28, 1943 when a Miles Master aircraft, from #61 OTU, had engine failure and crashed on take-off from the Rednal aerodrome, England. Flying Officer Pilot Watt is buried in the Scopwick Church Burial Grouns, Scopwick, Lincolnshire, England. Addendum: – F/O Watt had taken off from Digby with two other pilots from 416 squadron on a routine training flight. As the three aircraft were in a tail chase, P/O Phillips and Sgt. J.L.A. Cahlot lost sight of Watt, spotting his aircraft later in an inverted dive from which it did not recover before plunging into the soft ground of the Lincolnshire fen. The remains of BL 655 are displayed at the East Kirkby Aviation Museum, they will stand as a memorial to a young Canadian pilot who gave his life in the service of his King and Country at the age of twenty-one. Lancaster aircraft #NE 173 approached the target, Vire, Calvados, France, between 3,000 and 4,000 feet, and was hit either by flak or a German night fighter aircraft and caught fire in both wings. The crew carried out the attack and dropped their bomb load on the target. The pilot turned the aircraft away from the target and flew back over Vire gradually losing altitude. The Lancaster crashed at Vire, on Omaha Beach, and slid along the ground for about 200 yards breaking up into small burning pieces. P/C. J.D. Gallagher, FS J.P. Duns, and four of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed. P/O Weaver was killed when his Spitfire aircraft #MA 642 went missing in the Amiens area of France. On September 9, 1942, P/O Weaver failed to return from a fighter sweep over Sicily, it was believed he made a forced landing in his Spitfire and was reported to be a Prisoner of War. He was reported safe in Malta on September 29, 1943 and arrived in the United Kingdom on October 16, 1943. P/O Weaver had flown with #185 Sqdn. where he shot down eleven and one half enemy aircraft. He shot down two more with #403 Sqd. Pilot Officer Pilot Weaver is buried in the Meharicourt Communal Cemetery, Somme, France.

The aircraft was last seen near Montfort, France where it hit the ground and exploded. F/O Wendt bailed out but was never seen afterward. His #249 Squadron Spitfire aircraft had been hit by enemy flak on November 30, 1942 over the aerodrome at Gila and he was taken Prisoner of War by the Italians.
