The pilot continued with the take off finally lifting the aircraft off violently to avoid the obstructing woods. The aircraft stalled and crashed. WO J.A. Lancaster aircraft #KB 784 crashed in the sea whilst on a night raid against Kiel, Germany. Six Canadians, F/as D. Payne, George C. Riley, Fit. Banks, Sgt Sinclair, WO Miller, and FS Casey were all rescued and taken Prisoners of War. On the way to the target the aircraft was hit by flak. The pilot, F/L Don Payne D.F.C. was wounded in both legs but pressed on. They dropped their bombs and turned for home, during the return trip they were hit again. One engine after the other cut out and they had to ditch in the sea. F/L Payne was again injured but all the crew got into the dinghy. They were in that dinghy for 12 daysl They finally hit land at Bremerhaven, Germany and taken prisoner for just over a week. It took over a year for F/L Payne to get his D.F.C. and for F/O G.C. Riley to get his M.B.E. F/O Riley had taken charge in the dinghy after F/L Payne became unconscious from his wounds and exhaustion. In the Citation, Riley was credited with saving the crew the last half of their ordeal. The crash is believed to have been caused by lack of oxygen and not due to enemy action. Yule, ex-air gunner and now of Pine Falls, Manitoba recalls the following, “In early June, Peter, myself, and one other Gunner from our group were posted to 420 OTU, Lossiernouth, Scotland, and for four days participated in 10 training flights. We were then posted to A Flight, 420 OTU at Elgin, Morayshire, where crewing up took place. Though Peter and I shared neighboring bunks, the other Gunner and I, for no particular reason I can think of, decided to stay together and we were able to recruit a crew of All- Canadian members. This left Peter as odd-man-out, and he attached himself to a crew of (I believe) all RAF Aircrew. One evening Peter’s crew and our own took off for a night cross-country navigation exercise which was to take us over the Irish Sea. Our crew completed the flight, and we waited for Peter to return to share tea with us – finally retiring when they did not appear. During the night I was awakened by the Flt. Sgt in charge of our hut, who was removing Peter’s belongings from his bunk and locker. When I questioned what was going on, I was informed that Peter and his crew had gone missing. VYE, BENJAMIN HAVELOCK WO2(P) R73268. From Newcastle, New Brunswick. Killed Sep 22/42 age 20. #9 Advanced Flying Unit. Anson aircraft struck a hillside during a night navigation training flight. LAC G.A. Home (RAF) and three others of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed. Warrant Officer Class II Pilot Vye is buried in the Kirkinner Cemetery, Wigtownshire, Scotland.
VYE, BYRON EMERSON ALWYN F/O(N) J11791. From Campbellton, New Brunswick. Killed in Action Sep 27/43 age 26. #407 Demon Squadron (To Hold On High). Wellington aircraft #HF 124 failed to return from an anti-sub patrol over the Bay of Biscay. F/Os D.R. Parker, J.E. Godwin, D.S. Bier, F/L J. Craig, and one RAF crew member were also killed. Flying Officer Navigator Vye has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Runnymede War Memorial, Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey, England.
VYSE, CECIL EDWARD SGT(AG) R123285. From Beaverton, Ontario. Killed Feb 27/43 age 25. #16 Operational Training Unit. Wellington aircraft #X 3985 had one engine fail, lost height and struck a tree at Hazelbury House Farm, near Colerne Village, England. Four of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed. Sergeant Air Gunner Vyse is buried in the Haycombe Cemetery, Bath, Englishcombe, Somerset, England.
