Lancaster aircraft was shot down and burst into flames on contact with the ground at Les Granges, France during night operations against Frederikshaven, Germany. P/O A.E.S. Cooper (RAF), Sgts E.A. Cryer (RAF), S. McCallum (RAF), L.P. Oughton (RAF), K Rowley (RAF), and FS EM. Thompson (RAAF) were also killed. Wellington aircraft #BJ 762 was shot down by a German night fighter aircraft during a night trip to Bochum, Germany. Sgts J.A. Bailey and J.F. Gubb were also killed. One Canadian, WO J.H. Martin, and one RAF member of the crew were taken Prisoners of War. Flight Sergeant Pilot Todd is buried in the Nijemirdum General Cemetery, Gaasterlancl, Friesland, Holland.

TODD, ROBERT MERCER FS(BA) R145403. From Tecumseh, Ontario. Killed Sep 5/43 age 27. #1663 Conversion Unit. Halifax aircraft #DG 402 was in a mid-air collision before it crashed at Rowland Moor one and one half miles west of Low Mill, Scotland. FS Todd, Sgt N.J. Stirling aircraft #R 9149 crashed at Elan, France. P/O Tomlinson maintained control of the aircraft allowing his crew to jump to safety; he went down with the aircraft Two Canadians, Sgts J.R. Hudson aircraft #T 9445 lost near Sarnre, Belgium whilst engaged in a special operation. F/Ls A.N. Ferris, A.F. Penhale, and WO R.G. Hutton were also killed. Flying Officer Wireless Operator Air Gunner Traill was buried at Fraiture, Belgium, exhumed, and reburied in the War Cemetery, Heverlee, Brabant, Belgium. Addendum: – Hudson aircraft #T9445 NA-O was based at Tempsford in Bedfordshire and was to drop a SOE agent behind enemy lines at Reymagen and blow up the railway lines at Betzdorf Wissen. The Germans were pouring men and supplies down this line to reinforce their front line so it was an important target. When the agent bailed out, the bag containing the explosives, which was attached to his leg, caught on the aircraft and was lost. He landed successfully but because he had no means of completing his task he had to abort the mission and return to Allied lines. The Hudson was on its way home when it was intercepted and shot down. It was subsequently proved that the Hudson was shot down by an American Air Force Black Widow night fighter aircraft. The Americans shot down two Hudsons of 161 squadron that night. The crew of Lancaster aircraft #N 4945 took off from RAF Station, Langar on a night mine-laying operation and were not heard from again. Sgt T.E. Ellingham (RAF), F/O L. Foulds (RAF), P/O P.A.K. Mockford (RAF), and WO K.R. Rees (RAF) were also killed. Two of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Sergeant Flight Engineer Tyler is buried in the Lemvig Cemetery, Jutland, Denmark.

Silverwood D.F.M. (RAF), FS D.E.J. Stevens (RAF), and F/O C.F. Stewart D.F.M. (RAF) were also killed. Flight Lieutenant Bomb Aimer Tyndale is buried in the Northern Cemetery at Vorupor, Jutland, Denmark.

Two Spitfire aircraft from #401 Squadron were attacked by twelve enemy FW-190 fighter aircraft and they collided with each other. The Spitfires crashed in the Somme, Estuary, France; the pilot of the other aircraft, FS F.A. Duff, was also killed. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Tyre is buried in the Communal Cemetery Extension, Abbeville, France.
