F/O Sharpe was engaged in an armed reconnaissance in the district of Orber, France when his Typhoon aircraft #MN 347 went into a spin while executing a sharp turn at a low altitude. He was killed when his aircraft crashed and burned in an orchard near the target. Flying Officer Pilot Sharpe is buried in the Bayeux War Cemetery, France.

Mosquito aircraft #RS 516 lost while harassing the enemy over the Linz area of Germany, near Landau airfield south of Staubing, Germany. Both members of the crew, the pilot, not a Canadian, were seen by accompanying aircraft to abandon the Mosquito and land safely by parachute. F/L Shaver was dive-bombing the railroad at Buldern, Germany when his Typhoon aircraft #MN 144 was hit by flak while at a low altitude; the aircraft then rolled over and crashed. Defiant aircraft #DR 896 was operating at 1,000 feet and was approaching the practise target on its sixth run in when it went into some low level aerobatics and crashed at the Eastney A.A. FS Shaver died from burns sustained when his Blenheim aircraft #Z 7704 was damaged in a flying battle 20 miles east of Saurga, North Africa. Flight Sergeant Pilot Shaver was buried in the Civil Cemetery at Misurata, Libya, exhumed, and reburied in the Military Cemetery, Tripoli, Libya.

SHAW, ARTHUR EDMUND FS(WAG) R64712 From Hartland, New Brunswick. Killed in Action Nov 29/41 age 20. #42 Squadron (Fortiter In Re). Beaufort aircraft was carrying a torpedo when it was damaged in air action. The crew dropped flares just prior to the aircraft crashing into some cables. The torpedo exploded before the aircraft hit the ground at Speedgate Farm near Farningham, Kent. The RAF pilot, Sgt D.B. Heron, was also killed. SHAW, JOSEPH HAROLD GOURLEY WO1 (N) R51824. From North Bay, Ontario. Killed in Action Oct 5/42 age 21. #419 Moose Squadron (Moosa Aswayita). Target – Aachen, Germany. Wellington aircraft encountered severe icing conditions enroute to the target and failed to return. FSs R. Doherty, S.A. Palmer, G. Erwin Robson, and one RAF crew member were also killed. Two #419 Squadron aircraft did not return from this sortie and four of the Squadron’s aircraft had to turn back because of the severe weather conditions. The pilot obtained permission for a right hand circuit and, on turning into the wind, the aircraft went into a spin and crashed three miles west ot the Beaulieu aerodrome. WO R.W. Stewart, Sgts H.W. Gunn, R.A. Rollins, A.G. Gapes (RAF), J. Ryan (RAF), and FS L.G. Watson were also killed. Flight Sergeant Air Gunner Shaw is buried in the St. John Churchyard, Boldre, Hampshire, England.

The crew of Lancaster aircraft B 800 had started the daylight bomb run when they were hit by flak which knocked off a piece of the wing and set both starboard engines on fire. The aircraft went out of control and just as the order to bail out was given the aircraft exploded and then crashed at Lohmannsheide, Germany. F/O J.N. Therreault, P/Os R.G. Manwell, L.C. Levasseur, R.H. Bowen, and P/O G. Adams (RAF) were also killed. The pilot, F/O A.M. Roy had this to say, “Flak hit our wing and both engines caught fire so I ordered a bail out. The aircraft exploded and I was blown out and came to at about 5,000 feet. I landed among a bunch of flak gunners and was taken Prisoner of War. I didn’t know what happened to my crew until after the war.” Pilot Officer Navigator Sigal was buried in the Waldfriedhof Forest Cemetery, Lohmannsheide, exhumed, and reburied in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Germany.

Thompson were shot down and killed. P/Os W. Floody and B.G. Hodgkinson were also shot down but were taken Prisoners of War. P/O Wally Floody engineered the tunnel system for the escape from Stallag Luft 3 of 50 Allied airmen who were all captured and shot by the Gestapo. Wally survived the war and lived in Toronto, Ontario until his death in 1990. Pilot Officer Pilot Small, is buried in the Town Cemetery, Dunkirk, France.

They commenced their corkscrew with a steep diving turn; whereupon a wing folded back.
