The crew of Anson aircraft #DJ 659 were on a night navigation exercise when the aircraft flew into some clouds and went out of control. The Anson crashed at Compton Casey near the RAF Station at Chedworth, Gloucestershire. Two airmen, not Canadians, were also killed. P/O O’Blenes was the pilot of Spitfire aircraft #AB 242 engaged in low. flying and was killed when he crashed into the Officer’s Mess on the aerodrome at Llanbedrog, Wales. Halifax aircraft #DG 226 had the port outer engine on fire when it dived into the ground on the Wetherby Golf Course, Yorkshire. F/O G. Burnie, FSs J.D. Morrison, E.G. Barrie, and two members of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed. Flight Sergeant Pilot Osborne is buried in the Stonefall Cemetery, Wetherby Road, Harrogate, Yorkshire, England. Addendum: – The pilot was practicing three engined landings when the outer starboard engine caught fire. In May of 1992 a memorial was unveiled, at the crash site, in memory of the four Canadians and two Englishmen killed. As flags fluttered from the mastheads in a strong breeze, Wing Commander Bobby Sage, president of the York Air Museum at Elvington, unveiled the memorial in front of representatives of the RCAF, the RAF and Wetherby Council, and many members of the Wetherby Golf Club.
