Wellington aircraft #BK 512 had the starboard engine catch fire about one hour after take-off. F/O Gain was killed when the aircraft crashed four miles east of Tamworth, England. P/O Gain was killed when his Hurricane aircraft #Z 2935 was shot down in the El Adem area during a flying battle. Pilot Officer Pilot Gain is buried in the Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Acroma, Libya.

GAINES, CHARLES WILLIS F/L(P) J13333. From Aroostook, New Brunswick. Killed Aug 31/44 age 21. #519 Squadron. Ventura aircraft #JS 518 took-off on a meteorological flight and had been flying normally for about ten minutes when it went into a right hand roll and crashed one mile south-west of Keiss, Caithness. Cpl. J.P.H. Strachan (RAF), FS W.E. Sweetapple (RAF), and one other member of the crew, not Canadian, were also killed. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Gaines is buried in the Wick Cemetery, Caithness, Scotland.

GAINOR, FRANK MARSHALL CPL 4183 – service police. From Calgary, Alberta. Killed Mar 21/41 age 20. RCAF Station, Vancouver, British Columbia. Cpl. Gainor was on night duty and was killed when a tractor fell over the edge of the sea wall at Vancouver pinning him to

the float on which he was standing. Corporal Gainor is buried in the Union Cemetery at Calgary, Alberta.

Lancaster aircraft #ED 904 was shot down at Dortmund, Germany during operations against Bochum, Germany. Six of the crew not, Canadians, were also killed. Pilot Officer Air Gunner Galavan was buried in the Mahn Prisoner of War Cemetery, Dortmund, exhumed, and reinterred in the Reichswald Forest ‘War Cemetery, Kleve, Germany.

Oxford aircraft #HN 469 was approaching the airfield at Newton, Norfolk in bad weather and struck some trees. Two airmen, not Canadians, were also killed. Lancaster aircraft #W 4379 was shot down two miles north of Zerbsthanhalt, sixty-five miles south-west of Berlin, Germany. Two Canadians, Sgts A.G. Carswell and C.E. Clemens, and three of the crew, not Canadians, were taken Prisoners of War. One of the crew, not Canadian, missing belreved killed. Flight Sergeant Observer Galbraith was buried in the Cemetery for Russian Prisoners of War north of Zerbsthanhalt, exhumed, and reburied in the Berlin War Cemetery, Charlottenburg, Germany.

GALBRAITH, ROBERT FRANCIS F/L(P) J11978 A.M. From Shelburne, Ontario. Killed in Action Apr 5/45 age 22. #181 Squadron (Irruimus Vastatum). F/L Galbraith was flying Typhoon aircraft #SW 552 and was engaged in an armed reconnaissance when his aircraft was hit by flak. The Typhoon dove straight into the ground one mile south of Hartlage, Germany. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Galbraith is buried in the War Cemetery at Rheinberg, Germany. Addendum: – Air Medal (United States) – 11th USAAF (deceased) – Award effective 27 August 1943 as per Canada Gazette dated 4 May 1946 and AFRO 473/46 dated 10 May 1946. Home in Shelburne, Ontario. Enlisted Toronto 6 August 1941. Trained at No.3 ITS (graduated 5 December 1941), No. 4 EFTS (graduated 30 January 1942), and No. 13 SFTS (graduated 5 June 1942). Killed in Action 5 April 1945 while serving with No.181 Squadron. Details found in DHist file 181.009 D.4402 (RG.24 Vol.20648) where USAAF 11th Air Force General Order No.106 dated 27 August 1943, on behalf of Alaska Defence Command, lists officers receiving Air Medal for meritorious achievement in aerial flight with the following citation; NOTE: The same order awards posthumous Air Medals to J5216 F/L D.W.N. Wakeling (Vancouver, flights 1 January to 6 May 1943), 111978 F/L R.F. Galbraith (Shelburne, flights 18 April to 26 July, 1943), and J27371 P/O R.M. Bell (Hot Springs, Arkansas, flights 19 April to 10 August 1943). Apparently not approved by RCAF authorities. The file contains much operational information on all those decorated on this occasion. All were in No.14 (F) Squadron. The citation reads – “These officers, as pilots of fighter planes, participated in numerous attacks on enemy installations in the Aleutians which were pressed home despite heavy anti-aircraft fire and often under adverse weather conditions. All flights were made from advanced bases and required skillful airmanship for a successful execution of the mission. The port engine failed, the aircraft went out of control and crashed near Mira, Portugal. WO G.G. McLean (RAAF) and S/L D.D. McPetrie (RAF) were also killed. Warwick aircraft #BV 247 took off from RAF Station St. Mawgan, Newquay, on scheduled service flight UMB 55 (U.K: to Maison Bianco, Algiers via Gibraltar) and collided with an enemy aircraft shortly after. The Warwick went down in the sea in Newquay Bay. The aircraft was carrying 1680 lbs. of freight, three aircrew and eleven passengers who were all killed. The aircrew were F/O Gavel, F/O H. Austen, and Sgt Rowe (RAF). The passengers included: two French Officers enroute to General DeGaulle, two Polish couriers enroute to Warsaw, one Senior Staff officer enroute to Cairo, one Greek expert enroute to Greece, one Canadian/Hungarian enroute to Hungary on an S.O.E. mission, three S.O.E. Officers, and one Russian speaking M.I.6 Officer enroute to Yugoslavia to join Tito. F/O, Gavel’s body had wrongly been identified as an unknown Merchant Seaman and was buried in the Fairpark Cemetery at Newquay, the headstone read, “A sailor of the Merchant Marine killed on April 24, 1944.” The grave was exhumed in 1984 and pathologist experts identified the remains as those of F/O Gavel. Flying Officer Pilot Gavel is buried in the Fairpark Cemetery at Newquay, Cornwall, England. His name is also inscribed on the Runnymede War Memorial, Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey, England.

Arrived in UK, 24 April 1941 and further trained at No.55 OTU. The citation reads – “Since joining the squadron in July 1941, this airman has carried out several offensive fighter patrols over enemy territory both by day and by night. Targets attacked included power stations, large concentration distilleries and factories. On one occasion Flight Sergeant Gill sighted two of our aircraft which had been forced down onto the sea and remained over them until driven off by a formation of enemy fighters. On 12th February 1942 this airman participated in operations against a German battleship and their escorts and pressed home his attack with great determination in the face of fierce enemy opposition. He damaged at least one enemy motor vessel and one enemy aircraft. The citation reads – “One night in February 1943, Squadron Leader Gilmore and Sergeant Smith were captain and bomb aimer respectively of an aircraft detailed to attack Cologne. Whilst over the target area the aircraft was subjected to heavy anti-aircraft fire and sustained much damage. The aircraft went out of control and considerable height was lost before Squadron Leader Gilmore regained control. The bomber was riddled by shell splinters and one of his propellers was shot away, two compasses were rendered useless and all navigational charts were lost. The citation reads – “This airman was the flight engineer of an aircraft detailed to attack Nuremberg one night in March 1944. During the operation the aircraft was repeatedly attacked by fighters and sustained extensive damage. A fire commenced but Sergeant Glass, by his gallant and determined efforts, succeeded in extinguishing the flames. Later, whilst over the North Sea on the homeward flight, the pilot was forced to bring the aircraft down on to the water. Two wounded members of the crew were in danger of losing their lives but were saved by Sergeant Glass who also assisted other members of the crew into the dinghy. Trained at No.2 ITS (graduated 2 January 1941), No.12 EFTS (graduated 24 February 1941), and No.1 SFFS (graduated 16 May 1941. LAC, 2 January 1941; Sergeant, 16 May 1941; P/O, 17 May 1941; F/O, 17 May 1942; F/L. 30 August 1942. Served in Malta; killed in flying accident (Liberator crash at Gibraltar), 31 October 1942. The citation reads – “This officer has participated in many sorties over Sicily. In the heavy fighting over Malta he has taken part in many interceptions and his flight has destroyed twelve enemy aircraft. GLAZIER, FREDERICK JOHN F/O(P) J25835. From New Westminster, British Columbia. Killed Aug 2/44 age 22. #288 Squadron. F/O Glazier was flying Hurricane aircraft #KZ 376 and took off from the aerodrome at Coltishall, Norfolk, England. He was killed when he crashed at Church Farm, County Rushton. It is believed that the aircraft stalled after entering low cloud. Flying Officer Pilot Glazier is buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, Woking, Surrey, England.

F/O Glazier was flying Beaufighter aircraft #NV 305 and was approaching to land when the aircraft stalled. Both F/Os Glazier and R.E. Fetherstone were killed when their aircraft crashed at the airport at Mauripur, India. Flying Officer Pilot Glazier is buried in the British Military Cemetery, Karachi, Pakistan.
