ANGUS, ALLAN BENJAMIN F/O(P) 40281 – Royal Air Force. From McCreary, Manitoba. Killed in Action May 17/40 age 22. #85 Squadron (Noctu Dique Venamur). Hurricane aircraft was shot down near Dunkirk, France. F/O Angus was one of the first Canadian aces of W.W.II., he was credited with destroying five enemy aircraft. EXTRACT FROM LONDON GAZETTE DATED 31 May 1940. THE KING has been graciously pleased to approve the following award in recognition of gallantry and devotion to duty in the execution of air operations: Distinguished Flying Cross – Flying Officer Allan Benjamin ANGUS (40281) RAF Air Component. This officer has shown great determination in taking every opportunity of engaging the enemy and pressing home his attacks. He took part in an inconclusive attack on a Junkers 88, which resulted in serious damage to the enemy aircraft. His own aircraft was hit and as a result he had to force land in Belgium. Acting on his own initiative he rejoined his squadron in a few hours. In May, while on patrol, he intercepted and shot down in flames a Heinkell III, and on the same patrol, took part in shooting down a second enemy aircraft. F/O Angus was tied with W/C. M.H. Brown as being the first Canadian ace in W.W. II. Flying Officer Pilot Angus is buried in the Communal Cemetery, Fretin, Nord, France.

Yale aircraft #3368 was engaged in a routine training flight when it went into a spin and crashed three quarters of a mile north-west of the aerodrome at Mount Hope, Ontario. Probably a mid-air collision with LAC C.J. Gough in Yale aircraft #3360 as he crashed and was killed at the same time in the same location. ARCHER, PHILLIP LESLIE I. S/L(P) J3508 D.F.C. From Hasting St. Michael, Barbados. Killed in Action Jun 17/43 age 27. #402 City of Winnipeg Squadron. Spitfire aircraft #KZ 996 lost during a cross channel sweep. S/L Archer had been wounded flying Spitfires with #92 Squadron and was an ace credited with destroying six enemy aircraft. This was his last sortie as Commanding Officer of #402 Squadron, he was to take over as C.O. of #421 Squadron. Squadron Leader Pilot Archer is buried in the St. Omer Cemetery, Longuenesse, France. Distinguished Flying Cross – No.416 Squadron – Award effective 24 August 1942 as per London Gazette dated 11 September 1942 and AFRO 1535/42 dated 25 September 1942. Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, 1917. Joined RCAF in Montreal, 6 June 1940. Trained at No.1 ITS , No.6 EFTS, and No.1 SFTS. Posted overseas immediately; to No.57 OTU, 17 February 1941; to No.92. Squadron, 5 May 1941 where he destroyed three enemy aircraft and damaged one. To No.412 Squadron, 11 November 1941; to No.416 Squadron (Flight Commander), 10 March 1942. To Station Kenley, 1 December 1942. Presented with award 9 February 1943. Designated CO, No.402 Squadron, 13 June 1943 and attached to No.421 Squadron for a few days to get back to operational standards. On 17 June 1943 he took command of No.421 Squadron on posting of CO; Killed in Action 17 June 1943. Aerial victories as follows: 23 June 1941, one BE109F destroyed southeast of Boulogne; 7 July 1941, one BE 109F destroyed and one damaged near Lille; 9 July 1941, one BE 109F destroyed near Bethune; 18 July 1942, one Do.217 destroyed east of Oxfordness; 17 June 1943, one FW.190 destroyed (action in which he was killed). The citation reads – “This officer has completed sorties over enemy territory and has destroyed at least four enemy aircraft. On one occasion, although wounded in the leg, Flight Lieutenant Ascher flew his badly damaged aircraft back to the base where he executed a skillful landing.
