The Royal Red Force Cross

Awarded to a Nurse, Nurse's Aid or Volunteer who has performed an exceptional act of bravery and devotion to her post of duty. Membership is limited to 5% of establishment and members are called Associates and use the initials A.R.R.C.

Prior to the South African Campaign of 1877-9, nurses had not been considered eligible for war medals. As a result, Queen Victoria approved the institution of the Royal Red Cross for award to British and foreign women.

Obverse: Cross patee in frosted silver with a Maltese Cross enamelled red superimposed and the head of the reigning Sovereign in the centre.

Reverse: Inscribed on the arms are the words "FAITH, HOPE, CHARITY &1883", with the Imperial Cypher and Crown in the centre.

Mounting: Small ring at top of cross through which a larger ring passes. Badge is worn from a bow. It can also be mounted with other medals in which case the ring is attached to a narrow straight bar.

Ribbon: 1 inch; Light Blue centre (1/2") with Red edges (1/4").
