The Air Force Medal

Awarded to non-commissioned officers and men for an act or acts of exceptional valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying, though not in active operations against the enemy.

Obverse:

Reverse:Within a laurel, a representation of Hermes, mounted on a hawk in flight bestowing a wreath. The date 1918 is behind Hermes on the George VI and Elizabeth II medals.

Mounting: Bomb attached to the clasp and ribbon by two wings.

Ribbon: 1 1/4inches; Red and White alternative stripes, 1/16" wide at a 45 degree angle left to right. (until July 1919 the bars were horizontal)

Issued: George V--1; George VI--43 (1 bar); EIIR--3 as of 1983.

Example

Sgt. Maj. Walter Robert Maxwell: only AFM awarded for service during the First World War.
