The London Gazette of October 29, 1943 gave the following particulars: Flying Officer Trigg had rendered outstanding service on convoy escort and anti-submarine duties. He had completed his operational sorties and had invariably displayed skill and courage of a very high order. One day in August, 1943, he undertook, as captain and pilot, a patrol in a Liberator aircraft although he had not previously made any operational sorties in that type of aircraft. After a search of eight hours’ duration, a surfaced U-boat was sighted. F/O Trigg immediately prepared to attack. During the approach the aircraft received many hits from the submarine’s antiaircraft guns and burst into flames. F/O Trigg could have broken off the engagement and made a forced landing in the sea; but if he continued the attack every second spent in the air would dimish his chances of survival. There could have been no hesitation or doubt in his mind. In spite of the precarious condition of his aircraft, he maintained his course and executed a masterly and devastating attack. A short distance further on the Liberator dived into the sea with gallant captain and crew. The U-boat sank within 20 minutes and some of her crew were picked up later in a rubber dinghy that had broken loose from the Liberator. Trigg was the only one of the crew to be decorated. The V.C. was awarded due to the details provided by one of the German survivors of U468. Flying Officer Pilot Goodwin has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Malta War Memorial, Malta.

Cited with F/O John Hall, RAF (awarded DFC). The citation reads – “One night in July 1943, Flying Officer Hall and Sergeant Goudy were captain and rear gunner respectively of an aircraft detailed to attack Cologne. When nearing the target area the bomber was intercepted by an enemy fighter but Flying Officer Hall evaded it. A few minutes later the aircraft was illuminated by a cone of searchlights and hit by anti-aircraft fire but Flying Officer Hall held to his course and pressed home his attack. Almost immediately the bomber was hit by gun fire from an enemy fighter and sustained severe damage. Skilful evading action enabled Flying Officer Hall to fly clear of the defenses and course was set for base. At the beginning of the action Sergeant Gaudy was seriously wounded, sustaining a fracture of the hip bone and pelvis, splinters of which pierced organs in his abdomen. In spite of this, Sergeant Gaudy refrained from informing his captain of his injuries until another Wounded comrade had received attention. During the return flight he remained constantly alert to the possibility of enemy interferences and gave reassuring replies to his captain’s repeated inquiries as to his welfare. On reaching the English coast morphia had to be administered to him as his pains from his injuries were unendurable. Flying Officer Hall succeeded in reaching an airfield where he landed without the assistance of flaps. In the face of a trying ordeal he displayed outstanding skill, courage and determination while Sergeant Goudy’s indomitable spirit, fortitude and tenacity were worthy of the highest praise.” Detail provided by H. Halliday, Orleans, Ontario.

LAC Gravell earned the G.C. when his Menasco Moth #4833 crashed and burned twenty miles north-west of Calgary, F/O J. Robinson also killed. The citation reads, “In November, 1941, a training aircraft crashed and burst into flames. Gravell, who was under training as a wireless air gunner, extricated himself from the wreckage. In spite of the intense shock caused by the loss of one eye and severe burns, his only thought was the welfare of his pilot. The pilot was still in the aircraft, and Gravell, ignoring his own injuries and the fact that his clothes were ablaze, attempted to get back to the flaming wreckage to pull him clear. He had barely reached the aircraft when he was dragged away and rolled on the ground to extinguish the flames which had, by this time, completely enveloped his clothing. Gravell subsequently died from his burns. Had he not considered his pilot before his own safety and had he immediately proceeded to extinguish the flames on his own clothing, he would probably not have lost his life.” The aircraft crashed in the yard of the Big Springs School and a teacher, Mrs. F. Walsh and her pupils pulled Gravell away from the wreckage. They rolled him on the ground to extinguish his clothing and rendered first aid until medical officers arrived. Mrs. Walsh was burned about the face and suffered shock but ignored her injuries until Gravell was tended to.  She was awarded the George Medal for her heroic efforts. Cries were shortly heard from another member of the crew, who had broken his arm; F/O Gray helped him also into the dinghy. Although suffering intense pain F/O Gray refused to get into the dinghy, knowing it could not hold more than two persons, and for some hours he hung on to its side, aided by one of its occupants and by the fourth member of the crew. The pain from his leg (it is thought that the lower part had been shot off) was increasing in intensity and he was becoming exhausted. He steadfastly refused, however, to endanger his comrades by entering the dinghy. He eventually lost consciousness and died.
