F/L Johnson was engaged in strafing enemy transport when the port wing of his Spitfire aircraft #MB 809 hit a tree. He could not bail out and attempted to return to base. He was killed when the Spitfire went out of control while flying at 7,000 feet and crashed one mile west of the landing strip north-west of Caen, France.
